Pack for warm humidity, sudden rain and wet activities—even if you visit La Fortuna during Costa Rica’s drier months. You don’t need heavy expedition gear, but good shoes, quick-dry clothing and a light rain layer will make almost every day easier.

What Shoes Should You Bring?
One pair of real walking shoes matters more than several outfits. Trail shoes or lightweight hiking shoes are ideal for volcano paths and muddy days. Dry Season vs. Green Season
From December through April, expect generally drier conditions but don’t assume every day will be dry. La Fortuna sits in Costa Rica’s Northern Plains and can receive rain throughout the year. Waterfall and Rafting
Wear a swimsuit under quick-dry clothing and shoes that stay securely on your feet. Bring a change of clothes in a dry bag.
Hanging Bridges and Wildlife Tours
Neutral lightweight clothing, closed shoes and binoculars work well. A small umbrella can be useful during gentle rain, but a rain jacket leaves your hands free.
Hot Springs
Bring a swimsuit, sandals and dry clothes. Avoid wearing your favorite pale swimsuit because mineral water and pool surfaces may affect fabric.
Night Walks
Wear long lightweight pants and closed shoes. Your guide will normally provide a flashlight, but a small backup light is useful.
Family Packing Tips
Bring a familiar snack for transfers, reusable bottles, an extra outfit in the daypack and a child carrier if your toddler can’t manage long trails. Many of our homes can provide practical family items, but confirm availability before leaving home rather than packing based on an assumption.

Town has supermarkets, pharmacies and small shops, so forgetting sunscreen or toiletries isn’t a crisis. Specialty outdoor products and specific prescription items may be harder to replace. Pack those from home.
