Renting a Car in Costa Rica with Kids: Car Seats, Space and Family Travel Tips
The car seats five, your family has four people and the booking looks straightforward. But will it fit two child restraints, suitcases and a stroller at the same time?
When renting a car in Costa Rica with kids, plan passenger safety and luggage space together. Seat count alone is not a reliable packing plan.
Start with each child’s age, height and weight
COSEVI’s published regulation covers children under 12 who are shorter than 1.45 meters in the vehicles within its scope. It relates restraint choice to age, weight and height and specifies installation according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm the appropriate system for each child rather than choosing from age alone. (COSEVI — child restraint regulation)
Send the rental provider your children’s measurements and ask for the restraint type and model it can supply. Confirm compatibility with the vehicle and the instructions needed to install it correctly.
Bringing a seat or requesting one
Your own familiar restraint can be a practical option if it meets the applicable requirements and can be correctly installed in the rental vehicle. Check travel arrangements with your airline and vehicle compatibility with the rental company.
If requesting a rental restraint, ask for written confirmation of the type, availability and charge, if any. At pickup, review the condition and instructions before proceeding. A general request for “a baby seat” is less useful than specifying the child’s measurements and needs.
Traveler discussions include reports about availability and fitting concerns. Those individual experiences are a reason to plan carefully, not evidence that every rental seat is unsuitable. (Traveler discussion — child seat availability) (Traveler discussion — passenger and luggage space)
Check luggage space with all required seats in use
Hypothetical example: Two adults and two children arrive with a stroller, two large suitcases and carry-ons. A vehicle with enough passenger seats may still have limited usable cargo room once the family and restraints are in place.
Ask for the booked category’s practical space, including the luggage area with any third row occupied. Explain your packing list rather than simply saying “we are four.” Check that bags can be secured without obstructing the driver’s view or safe use of the restraints.
Build extra time into airport pickup
Collecting bags, completing the contract, inspecting the car and installing restraints take planning. Do not schedule your first activity around the flight’s landing time. If the flight arrives late, consider an arrival plan that gives you time to settle in.

Use the car to make family days easier
A car can let you leave an outing early, shop for familiar snacks or return home for a rest. It also means an adult handles the driving and parking. Compare that with transport arranged for your activities before deciding.

Family booking checklist

- List bags, stroller and other bulky items.
- Check space with every occupied seat in use.
- Allow time for installation and inspection at pickup.
- Plan arrival, meals and rest without an overloaded first day.
Frequently asked questions
Is a booster right for every older child?
Choose using the child’s measurements, the applicable requirements and the restraint instructions. Age alone does not answer fit.
Are child seats automatically included?
Confirm the provider’s terms and the reservation. Do not assume inclusion or availability.
Will a seven-seat vehicle fit seven people and suitcases?
Ask about usable luggage space with all those seats occupied. The vehicle’s seat count is only part of the answer.
Can a transfer replace the rental car?
Yes, if the full transport plan meets your needs. Confirm suitable child restraints for the actual service too.
